What better Tarot card to talk about around Valentine’s Day than the Lovers? Originally, the Lovers card was focused on love itself, probably mostly the romantic kind. Later a third figure was added and it became more about a choice between two beloved people or things.

In the SparkTarot® deck, it’s about the idea of love again, and also the reality that sometimes other options beckon, even when love is present. It may or may not be as literal as choosing another person.

Time to Choose Love

The appearance of the Lovers card can indicate an aspect of your life that’s important and even beloved coming to a crossroads. It’s a time of your life when a choice must be made; even “no choice” is a choice. It is time to choose Love, whatever that may mean for you.

When we see the Lovers card come up, we immediately jump to ideas of romance and often the frought aspects of it. But the Lovers card is ultimately about relationships and choosing one’s path based on love.

Even the word “relationship” often has romantic connotations, and that can certainly be the case, depending on other factors of a Tarot reading. But relationship is ultimately about a connection between people, things, and/or ideas. Or even the complex connections between everyone and everything.

From an animist viewpoint, everything is alive with energy — even a stone — and we are always in some kind of relationship with it. And the quality of our web of connections will necessarily determine the quality of our lives.

Fritjof Capra says, “The more complex the network is, the more complex its pattern of interconnections, the more resilient it will be.”

We want to fortify these connections and create resilience in our networks and communities, a resilience which is the result of right relationship with the people and things around us. Making choices based on love during our lives is the best way to do that.

How the Lovers Card Can Point the Way: An Example

As a simple example that doesn’t involve romance, maybe you wake up one day and realize you hate your job. You used to like the work, in fact, you are actually great at your job now that it’s been so many years, and you even like your coworkers, but you aren’t learning anything anymore and it’s giving you a sense of boredom and unease.

Your coworker on the other hand, has been there just as long and is perfectly happy. She feels like she’s making a difference using the skills she’s really good at and like you, she also likes her coworkers.

What you need and what your coworker need are two different things even though your outer circumstances, including being good at your job and liking your coworkers are the same.

When you see the lovers card, it may be telling you that it’s time to act on what you need. It’s not productive to decide your life path based on what other people do or what someone else expects you to do.

If it’s just you involved, it will be easier to make the decision. But what if there are others depending on you? Does this mean you quit your job even then? Not if your love for them having a stable life outweighs your love of challenging work in the short term.

The key word in this case is short-term. Because while you might need to stay in the situation a while longer, you now know what you love and what you don’t love about your work, and you can either focus and do more of what you do love at work (like taking on a more challenging project in this case) or start to seriously look for something to transition into that offers this aspect of what you love.

In Conclusion

This mindset can apply to anything from big life decisions like fulfillment at work or in a romantic relationship, to smaller ones, like whether or not to sell a record collection or start a blog.
