Winter Magic: Family Traditions
Week 4 of "Seven Weeks of Winter Magic"
Week 4 of Seven Weeks of Winter Magic — a gentle tarot series to help you move through the holidays with intention. Each week brings one card for reflection, a simple grounding practice, and small inspirations for savoring the season on your own terms. A quiet companion for a bright, busy time.
Take a Moment
First things first, if you are overwhelmed this week, stop and center yourself again, going back to what you really want. Look at the paper where you wrote your values back in Week one of this series. Then move forward from that place, and be inspired by the Tarot card and activity below.

Card: 10 of CUPS Familial Love
A group of happy children play games joyfully in the forest near an outcrop of rocks. From a baby to a child to a young teenager, they are content and demonstrate their love for each other. The Ten of Cups represents satisfaction and joy similar to the Nine of Cups but on a deeper level, including the faithfulness, loving relationships and contentment at home.
Activity: Family Ties—Share and Pass Down a Tradition
If you have family traditions for the holidays, this is a good time to talk about them with the next generation and pass them down.
Sometimes we take comfort in having the tradition ourselves and forget to give it to the next generation. If you make a certain dish for a holiday dinner, show a younger family member how to make it or if they already know, ask them to make it this year.
Share with the Next Generation
When you are gathered, tell family stories that you have told before, make it a tradition to tell the same stories year after year. That time Uncle Bob burned the turkey, or the year it snowed right when the New Year turned at midnight.
Our culture values the novel and new, and people will say “Oh, we heard that one already,” but there is something very bonding about sharing the same stories with each other, the anticipation of the next part of the story, the sharing of laughter at Uncle Bob’s shenanigans. You’re cultivating a sense of being on the inside of something, which is always comforting.
Start a Tradition
If you don’t already have traditions, consider what is important to you. Then share it with someone else and begin a yearly tradition. These are the things that create deep bonds between people, even more than planned events themselves. Show your friends or family how much you love them by sharing with them and being open to them sharing with you.
